Following cataract surgery, approximately 1 out of 3 patients will develop clouding of the membrane behind the new lens implant. This clouding may cause blurred or hazy vision or the patient may be bothered by glare. This condition, called “posterior capsule fibrosis,” cannot be prevented, but a minor outpatient procedure called “YAG laser capsulotomy” nearly always results in improved vision.
During a YAG laser capsulotomy, the laser dissolves the membrane behind the new lens implant. This painless procedure takes just a few minutes, and no anesthesia is necessary.
