Drooping eyelids are often caused by problems with the muscles that lift the eyelid. This condition, called “ptosis,” can make a person look older, but can also cause vision problems.
When the eyelids droop to the point that you must tip your head back so you can see better, or you must raise your eyebrows to lift your eyelids, your doctor may recommend eyelid surgery.
The surgical procedure that corrects this condition is called blepharoplasty.
Using laser or scalpel, the surgeon makes an incision along the natural fold lines of the upper eyelids to remove excess fat and skin. Similarly, fat is removed from the inside of the lower eyelids. Sutures close and retighten the lids, resulting in unobstructed vision and a more youthful, pleasant expression.
BLEPHAROPTOSIS: A drooping upper eyelid.
ENTROPION REPAIR: Repair of an upper or lower eyelid that is turned inward, with its edge rubbing the eyeball.
ECTROPION REPAIR: Repair of an upper or lower eyelid that is turned outward, with its edge no longer resting against the eyeball.
CANTHOPLASTY: Reconstruction of the inside or outside corner of the eye, where the upper and lower eyelids meet.
